Status: initial workings
Here is the data we have obtained, so far, on electricity transmission infrastructure (major powerlines) in Australia, for lines >110kV. Our efforts here continue to focus on identifying and obtaining the requsite data.
First; Geoscience Australia makes available spatial data on the transmission grid above 110kV throughout Australia excluding South Australia. The data is freely available from Geoscience Australia, but must be downloaded in many small sections (or it can be purchased on a DVD). These data are provided as shape files, and the individual transmission lines can be extracted as polylines (sets of latitude and longitude coordinates). Note that Geoscience Australia make this data available according to this licensing agreement / copyright notice. We have this data and expect that in time we will have a good look at it and then provide here some details and characterisation of this transmission data.
Second; as the South Australian transmission line data is not freely available, we are working to provide an approximation of this network based on this map (1.9 MB pdf) (obtained from: http://www.aemo.com.au/planning/esoo2009.html, under 2009 ESOO Appendix E - Regional Boundaries Map). Derived data will be made available here shortly.
While we have, as above, more-or-less identified the Australian high-voltage transmission network, the capacities of the individual lines (in MW throughput) remain opaque. While this zipped csv / excel file (found at http://www.nemweb.com.au/Reports/Current/Alt_Limits/) gives the kVA capaities for the transmission lines (and substations) throughout Australia, there is no apparent metadata to link the "Plant ID" with the lines we identify above. Anyone?
These are proving a little difficult to pin down, and are more complicated than a single Maximum Capacity Value. That said, here is a outline of the connectors as we currently understand them, along with what may be rough maximum capacity values.
SA <=> VIC
Murry Link (220MW, HVDC both ways)
Heywood (SA to VIC) 300MW; (VIC to SA) 460MW
VIC <=> TAS
Basslink (TAS -> VIC) 600 MW; (VIC to TAS) 480 MW
VIC <=> NSW
This remains especially unclear. There are GW+ lines into and out of the Snowy region from both sides,
and probably other lines also.
NSW <=> QLD
Terranora (previously Directlink) 180 MW HVDC
QNI is (it seems) ~900 MW
We will keep chipping away at this and other aspects of the Transmission System; please get in touch with Alex (or comment below) if you can help us straighten all this out.
