LITERATURE - Demand Management papers

Demand management is the opposite of supply-side generation and storage. If you don't want the electricity at a particular time, it doesn't need to be generated or stored. Demand management is particularly important for flattening the peaks in grid demand which can cause real problems for system reliability in times of high load, such as heat waves (when everyone wishes to switch on their air conditioners).

However, we haven't looked hard at this topic yet, so the following list is even more tentative than usual. Your comments and suggestions on papers we might consider will be appreciated.

J. Y. Boivin, 1994
Demand side management - The role of the power utility
Pattern Recognition, Vol, 28, No. 10, pp 1493-1497
http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0031-3203(94)00154-E

The paper considers demand side management through home automation.

C. M. Chu, T. L. Jong (2008)
A Novel Direct Air-Conditioning Load Control Method
IEEE transactions on power systems, vol. 23, no. 3, aug
http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/TPWRS.2008.926432

The use of airconditioning management is assessed to control demand load. A novel algorithem is created to explore the least on-time of the system, while matching comfort levels.

Goran Strbac
Demand side management - benefits and challenges
Energy Policy 36 (2008) 4419-4426
http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.enpol.2008.09.030

The benefit of DSM are discussed through the transmission and distribution networks. Reasons for the slow take up of DSM in commercial and small business sectors are offered.

O. Sezgen, C.A. Goldman, P. Krishnarao, 2003
Option value of electricity demand response
Energy 32 (2007) 108-119
http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.energy.2006.03.024

Financial engineering methodologies (options, futures etc.) are matched to demand response technologies considering: load curtailment, load shifting or displacement, and short-term fuel substitution. They have generated models that assess the financial incentives of undertaking the demand management strategies.
